People's Music Network

1st part of a concert to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Pete Seeger's birth, held April 27th in Northampton, MA, at the Unitarian Society, as a benefit for Climate Action Now MA, part of a wealth of events for the 100th anniversary. This concert includes performances by Emma's Revolution, Sally Rogers, Charlie King, Annie Patterson, and Peter Blood.

Part 3 of musicians who performed with & whose music was grown by Pete Seeger. We'll end with his sister, Peggy Seeger, after visits with & music from Ruth Pelham of Music Mobile Online, DC Cultural Warrior & Singer Luci Murphy, and Jane Sapp, founder of the Black Belt Folk Roots Festival, and much, much, more. Pete's influence on music is alive and thriving in so many places!

Barb Tilsen became a devotee of folk music in the early '60s, and has spent a life mixing music, activism, and enrichment of children. Her circles of music & work have included the People's Music Network, the Midwest People's Music Network, and the Children's Music Network (CMN) - watch the video of Let The World Be Well - and she was the founder/early curator of the CMN Song Library.

Dada Veda uses a couple different taglines. One is Meditation, Music and Social Vision, and the other is Eastern Mysticism meets folk, country, and world music. He is a monk at the Ananda Liina Spiritual Eco-Community in Urbana, Illinois, where he teaches meditation and promotes the activism of his community through music. He is central in the work of RAWA (Renaissance Artists & Writers Association) and their Songs for Social Change contest, and broadcasts music on-line via RAWAradio.com.

The mission of Ananda Marga is self-realization & service to humanity, and one of the ways they do this is the work of RAWA (Renaissance Artists and Writers Association). They hold an annual contest of Songs for Social Change and today we look at the fruits of their 2017 submissions & CD with Dada Veda who oversees the contest.

Annie Patterson & Peter Blood support hope & change through their world-famous group singing books, Rise Up Singing and Rise Again. For close to 40 years they have been nurturing & leading group singing. Peter was editor for Pete Seeger's autobiography, Where Have all the Flowers Gone, and Annie performs in multiple configurations, including with Girls From Mars.

An old friend of Northern Spirit Radio, Charlie King, returns for the first time in nine years. Join us as this talented troubador shares his songs, stories, and trenchant wit with us and our listeners on Song of the Soul, tales from becoming a concientious objector as a Roman Catholic to being told by Pete Seeger to write a Woody Guthrie song.

Pete Seeger planted seeds of music & change everywhere he went, and some of that harvest is shared today (& next week) by a visit with Leda Schubert, author of Listen: How Pete Seeger Got America Singing (and also The Princess of Borscht), and musician friends of Pete's, Joe Jencks, Charlie King, and Pat Lamanna (and several more folks next week!). Pete was inspirational & transforming for so many people!

The music of Joe Jencks burns in the heart of the listener, both with his lyrics and his powerful voice. The stories and poetry of his songs lift up a vision of love, compassion and solidarity without preaching or posturing - just solid, inspirational music. In addition to a wealth of solo performing, he's now part of a trio called Brother Sun. As Joe says in one of his songs, "You may hold the candle but you cannot hold the flame".

Annie Patterson & Peter Blood have been encouraging group singing for the people, a la Pete Seeger, for almost 40 years, first with Winds of the People, then with Rise Up Singing, and now with 1200 more songs in Rise Again. They and other musicians are touring to share the music with their world premiere in Madison, WI, on 8/27/15, followed by a sing-along workshop on 8/29/15, 11am at the Great River Folk Festival, then off to Northern CA.
